Stop America's Violence Everywhere

SAVE logo

The Hap Awards were initiated in 1989 by the AMA Alliance to recognize excellence in the health promotion programs and projects of county alliances throughout the nation.  Each year five awards are given:  Best Fundraiser Project, Best Community Health Education Project, Best SAVE (Stop America's Violence Everywhere) Project, Best Community Service Project and Best Resident Physician Spouses-Medical Student Spouses Project.First Place goes to the LCMSA

For the year 2000, The Lee County Medical Society Alliance Foundation won the HAP Award for its SAVE Project. This was the first HAP Award ever received by a county in the state of Florida. And for the year 2002, we were honored to receive this award for a second time!

Our S.A.V.E. Project has been an annual workshop called "Bullies and Victims: A Proactive Approach to Stopping School Violence". This rigorous 3-day training workshop is open to guidance counselors of Lee County public and private lower schools, organized and hosted by Alliance volunteers, and conducted by SuEllen Fried (below). Mrs. Fried teaches participants a proven methodology on how to understand and handle various situations in the bully-victim (target)-witness relationship. To date, 65 Lee County Guidance Counselors, Educators and Alliance Members have completed the course (earning 12 CEU's) in order to become Certified Facilitators. Armed with new knowledge and the helpful teaching tools distributed during the course, Facilitators can continue the workshop at their schools in perpetuity! Most vital during the course is a "practice session", where Facilitators witness first-hand just how eager our youth are - to talk openly about bullying! The post-workshop evaluations completed by the counselors, school support staff and the students themselves have proven that this program truly is making a difference in helping to reduce the incidence of violence in our schools and our community.

The Workshop is FREE, thanks to generous underwriting by:
